RECONFIGURABLE VOIDS
AN OFFICE FOR THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY
Concepts that has defined the work space throughout the previous century, from designated desks to 9 to 5 jobs are disappearing in a pursuit for flexibility and increased productivity. The dawn of augmented reality transforms the nature of digital information from 2D screens into a spatial dimension that can be experienced in a physical space. Spatial information creates an opportunity to change the ratio between desk- and shared space, creating a new typology for the future that incorporates these trends.
Where the desk before had a monopoly as the hub of information and connectivity, technology has utterly transformed how we work and stay connected. There is no longer a need for a fixed desk in order to work. What defines a future office is therefore it’s ability to promote sharing, collaboration and networking.
The project is an attempt at creating such a new typology of office, that can accommodate augmented reality on a collaborative level. It’s an office typology where the idea is to be surrounded by whats needed, when needed, for every job - tailored to the gig economy and it’s temporality. It’s an office where the desk is no longer the most important part - and where the city is invited into into it’s core to promote sharing and collaboration through augmented reality.
Conceptually the project consist of two building, one within the other. The interior building is public and holds a variety of amenities useful for the modern office, but also usable by the city and the surrounding neighborhood. Where the exterior building resembles a normal office typology, with open and flexible floor plates, the interior building cascades through the interior creating a
volumetric variety of plateaus and voids, that can accommodate large scale collaborative augmented reality. The plateaus are reconfigurable and able to expand activities from the office or the amenities while also creating a continuous public space ideal for integrating the city into the office - and the office into the city.
